Harold Lloyd junto con Charles Chaplin y Buster Keaton, forma el grupo de los tres cómicos más importantes del cine mudo. Su filmografía incluye 206 obras entre cortos y largometrajes.
Comienza en el cine como extra en la Edison Film Company. Más tarde bajo las órdenes de de Hal Roach, del que era amigo desde hace años, y gracias a que éste recibe una herencia convirtiéndose en productor, Lloyd hace sus primeros papeles protagonistas. Interpreta a varios personajes de relativo éxito cómo “Willie Work” y “Lonesume Luke”, hasta que acierta al crear al “chico de las gafas” con el que ha trascendido en la historia del cine.
El primer corto dónde aparece este personaje es en Over the Fence (1913). Sus compañeras protagonistas más repetidas son Bebe Daniels que es sustituida por Mildred Davis en 1919. Las dos fueron su pareja sentimental, pero se casó con la segunda con quién mantuvo un matrimonio de más de cuarenta años.
En 1924 tiene un accidente rodando un spot publicitario y pierde dos dedos de la mano derecha. Desde entonces usa un guante protésico para ocultarlo al público aunque eso no le impide seguir mostrando sus acrobacias en la pantalla.

Speedy (1928) es su último film mudo, Welcome Danger (1929) también se rueda muda pero debido al éxito del cine sonoro, la rehace con sonido y se vuelve a estrenar. Es a partir del sonoro cuando su popularidad decae, pero ya es un famoso multimillonario, propietario de casi toda su obra fílmica y aunque se retira a los 45 años, continúa vinculado con el cine. Ya había publicado su autobiografía, diez años antes, con el título de “Una comedia americana”. En 1947 reaparece en The Sin of Harold Diddlebock de Preston Sturges.
Su cine no se emitía en televisión por lo que para las nuevas generaciones es un cómico desconocido en comparación con Chaplin y Keaton. A partir del reestreno en los años 60 de compilaciones de sus películas y sobre todo, desde que Annette D'Agostina se interesa por recuperar su filmografía y escribir varios libros sobre él, vuelve a ser considerado uno de los grandes del cine cómico.
